Srimad Bhagavad Gita Rahasya of Bal Gangadhar Tilak - English, Hindi & Marathi

English version of Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak's classic and well-known work on Gita - "Srimad Bhagavad Gita Rahasya".

Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856-1920), was a great patriot, philosopher, social reformer and freedom fighter who was the first popular leader of the Indian Independence Movement. The British colonial authorities infamously and derogatorily called the great leader as "Father of the Indian unrest". He was also conferred upon the honorary title of Lokmanya, which literally means "Accepted by the people (as their leader)". Tilak was one of the first and strongest advocates of "Swaraj" (self-rule) in Indian consciousness. His famous quote, "Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it !" is well-remembered in India even today.

Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the author of this work, interprets Gita as the scripture of Karmayoga. Karmayoga is performing one's duty without having any desire for its fruits. According to Tilak Gita teaches selfless action as is said in Chatper 2, Verse 48:

योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि संगं त्यक्त्वा धनन्जय।
सिध्यसिध्योः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते॥

yogasthah kuru karmaani sangam tyaktvaa dhananjaya
siddhyasiddhyoh samo bhuutvaa samatvam yoga ucyate

Remaining steadfast in yoga, oh Dhananjaya (Arjuna), perform actions, abandoning attachment, remaining the same to success and failure alike. This evenness of mind is called yoga.

This book consists of two parts. The first part is the philosophical exposition and the second part consists of the Gita, its translation and the commentary.

  2. This book is the source book of New (proactive or practical) Vedanta which Tilak and Vivekananda propounded by the end of 19th century and early years of 20th century. Its scholarship and insight is astonishing for a political leader who spent a very difficult time in Mandale prison where major part of this book was written.

  3. We are all daily seekers of inner peace, joy and happiness. There are times when we do enjoy inner peace for days together, but it gets shattered again and again. We tend to look for new solutions and the elite, the educated as well as common masses do pursue the most modern yet temporary methods available. However, even then our prayers ask for peace of mind every morning and before retiring for the day. Well, they say the voice of the people does reach God and He listens. He responds and bestows answers to our honest prayers from the heart. Shri Tilak, gives gives plenty to many people.

  4. Excellent blog.
Indian Vedic contribution is a reservoir of Vibrant Information and Harmonious Creativity. May the womb of nature embrace all with tranquil blessings from this day forward? Let this attract one's attention affecting them positively. It is a sanctuary of the self a creative venue which serves as an enduring expression of lightness, where a peaceful atmosphere with sunlight flows and serene atmosphere prevail.

In the storm of life we struggle through myriads of stimuli of pressure, stress, and multi problems that seek for a solution and answer. We are so suppressed by the routine of this every life style that most of us seem helpless. However, if we look closely to ancient techniques we shall discover the magnificent way to understand and realize the ones around us and mostly ourselves. If only we could stop for a moment and allow this to happen. May all beings be happy (Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavanthu) is the essence of Indian philosophy?

  5. Evenness of mind supports Socialism and not birth-caste-ism supported by Iscon. Please send a copy of Tilak's translation to Siberian Court for reference that ISCON's translations may be banned but not BHAGAVAD GITA.

  6. India need to get united & Lokmanya Tilak's comments "Everyone has translated Bhagavad Gita to support one's own beliefs" instigated me that One God has preached the same religion to re-align in God as one. So I wrote Bhagavad Gita preaches Bible, Koran, Socialism & Swadharma" with intent that India & Pakistan may unite to preach truth inera of the Doomsday/Kayamat to save mankind.
